Homemade bombs found in Basque region

BIARRITZ, France, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Police said they found three homemade explosive devices in the Basque region of France and were looking for more after receiving a phone call about the bombs.

More than 1,000 tourists were forced out of their hotels Friday by the scare, The Guardian reports.

Basque separatists in France and Spain have carried on a decades-long campaign for independence that has sometimes included deadly bombings. But investigators described the bombs discovered Friday as "weak and defective."

One was at a resort in Arcangues, one at the town's tourist office and one on a high-speed railway line in Ondres. Police said that one device was simply a can of gasoline with a detonator.

The anonymous caller claimed that two more bombs had been placed, one at the Biarritz casino and one at a Bidarray hotel once owned by celebrity chef Alain Ducasse. Ducasse sold the hotel and left the area because of attacks on his restaurant.
